Do you notice an inherent musicality in the paintings of Dan Lempert? If you do, perhaps it is because he is a musician. He knew from the age of nine that music had to be an important part of his life. And it has been for 77 years. During World War II he was the bugler for his oufit, and the solo trumpet player in the 339th Army Service Forces Band.
After the war he went to SUNY at Fredonia for his B.S. degree in music, then to Columbia for his M.A. in music education, and to Juilliard for Trumpet. He taught music in the public schools for 32 years, but visual art became increasingly important to him. It is now over 40 years that he has studied painting at the Memorial Art Gallery.
The rhythm, tempo, composition, and sound are translated into color, texture, shape, design, and composition in space. His painting, "Jazz Chorus II", won entry into the Finger Lakes Art Show. His artistic expression is a combination of the visual and auditory world around him.
Dan Lempert resides in Rochester, New York.
